Major function of AFT to be considered as follows:

  1. Torque transmission capability at torque converter
  2. Clutch wear control capability
  3. Hydraulic function at valve body and clutch mechanism
  4. Lubrication and protection capability of gears, bushings, bearings etc.
  5. Heat transfer capability of heat generated at torque converter and clutch.

Basically, it is required for ATF to be long life to meet the above mentioned functions as people quite often say "FILL FOR LIFE".
Furthermore, under recent requirement of better fuel efficiency, the improvement of slip control capability at lock up clutch and improvement of clutch transmission efficiency have become priority issue. To meet this, it is required for ATF better lubrication, protection and cooling characteristics.
Similar characteristics are required for CVTF. "FILL FOR LIFE" is the ultimate goal. However, in reality, you must change the fluid to maintain the performance of CVT, although the period differs to manufacturer.
